Rev. Dr. Kathi E. Martin is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. She is the former pastor of First Immanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, founder of God, Self, and Neighbor (GSN) Ministries, and former Minister for Multi-cultural Outreach at First Metropolitan Community Church. Presently Dr. Martin serves at The Victory Church in Stone Mountian, GA, and is a board member of the United Church of Christ Coalition for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns.

 

Dr. Martin has a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from The New Jersey Institute of Technology, a Master of Divinity from The Interdenominational Theological Center, and a Doctor of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary where her project was entitled: Wounded and Healed in the House of a Friend: The Faith Experience of African American Gay and Lesbian Persons.

One Saturday morning, I was at home wearing my fabulous Saturday-morning housecleaning ensemble -- scarf, old tee-shirt, the one with stains on it -- and suddenly the dog started barking like crazy as if an intruder was coming right into the house. As I looked down the stairs, I could see someone peeking in the window. Even though it was the middle of the morning at a window in front of the house, I was just as terrified and confused as those dogs. Still I edged my way down the stairs; and as I got closer to the window, I could make out the image. It was one of the associate ministers from our church. He had been trying to contact me and had been unsuccessful, so he got so concerned that he came to my house to check on me. Seeing an unknown image at the door was frightening. Trying to understand it was confusing, but realizing the who and the why was comforting and loving. Overall, the event was a mysterious visit.

When we woke up this morning, many of us stepped into a world of expectations. This was not a conscious decision; it's just where we live, in a land where life is so good we have the luxury of taking many things for granted. The air conditioning stayed on so we could awake to a comfortable room temperature; and if it was dark when we awoke, we reached for a light switch so the invisible dangers could be revealed. Then we walked into a room with running water inside the house, and now you're even listening to my voice over the radio you expected to work when you turned the switch.
