A New Name

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him... "No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations.
-Genesis 17:1-5

The name Abram in Hebrew means "exalted father." Now God adds to it, giving this chosen one a new name: Abraham, or "exalted father of many."

By giving him a new name, God set Abraham apart. God demonstrated authority over Abraham. And it's clear: God would keep God's promise to him.

Think about your name. Do you know what it means?
Look it up in a baby name book if you don't.
What do you like about your name?
What would you change?
How has its meaning been true in your life?
In what ways would you like to see your life reflect the meaning of your name more closely?
What name do you think God would give you?

Talk to God today about your name and how you'd like to live in light of its meaning.
