Dr. Steve McSwain

Dr. Steve McSwain has been called "the voice for the SBNR (Spiritual but Not Religious)."

He grew up in the Baptist church, but he's an advocate of inter-faith dialogue. He was a Christian minister for over 20 years but didn't receive his spiritual awakening until he quit going to church. Today, he is devoted follower of the Christ-path to knowing God but argues that Christianity isn't the only pathway to the Divine.

Dr. McSwain may be a walking contradiction. Or, he may speak for a growing number of Americans who are finding and creating new pathways of spirituality.

In The Enoch Factor: The Sacred Art of Knowing God, McSwain reaches out to an ever-growing segment of the American population - "Nones" or those who once attended church to find God but discovered instead a complex and frustrating set of rules and burdens, doctrines and dogmas, as well as conflict and division. Disenchanted, they switched denominations, or left entirely.

"Instead of a bridge to God, religion has become a barrier to God," says Dr. McSwain. "Why else would over 34 million Americans have left the church in recent years? My goal is not to bring these people back to church, but help those who seek an authentic spiritual life create the conditions for one."

"I have sometimes wondered if being 'Christian' for many people is little more than some ego-identification, a kind of role they play. It was for me," says Dr. McSwain. "I mistakenly thought being a Christian was subscribing to a narrow set of beliefs, holding membership in a church, or both. When I awakened out of this madness, however, everything changed: I now know there's a day-and-night difference between labeling yourself a Christian and living a Christ-conscious life, one in touch with what Buddhists might call your 'Buddha-nature.'"

Dr. McSwain experienced a spiritual awakening on a normal Sunday, but outside the church. Detailed in The Enoch Factor, this event inspired Dr. McSwain to embrace a new kind of spirituality, one that connects people to God and to other human beings, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or religious tradition.

He hopes his circuitous spiritual path will help others rediscover the sacred side of life.

Dr. McSwain is also the author of The Giving Myths: Giving Then Getting the Life You've Always Wanted (2007). For more information, please visitwww.stevemcswain.com.

Steve McSwain: Christian by Nature and Nurture

Sunday July 10, 2016
The God I feel I know by nature is not limited by my narrow-minded view of things. If I were to pretend only Christians know God, I would be deluding no one but myself. Besides, how arrogant can I be? To presume Christians alone know God says nothing about God, except perhaps that your view of her is pretty small.

Steve McSwain: Life's a Puzzle, Isn't It?

Saturday April 02, 2016
I don't have much patience with puzzles. It probably has something to do with the fact that I have a hard enough time putting the pieces of my own puzzling life together. Why would I wish to complicate things more by adding to it an actual puzzle?

Steve McSwain: Religion: How to Love Them All and Be IN LOVE with Yours

Friday October 30, 2015
I thought about something Mother Teresa purportedly said some years ago: "I love all religions, but I'm IN LOVE with my own." I love that. In fact, I have loved it so much, I created a pendant I wear that pronounces that very truth.

Friday January 16, 2015
Want to live a better life in the new year? I can think of many things our world needs. I can think of few things the world needs more, however, than this: better people living better lives in a world gone very wrong.

Steve McSwain: Crucifixion: A New Way to Think About Jesus' Death

Saturday April 26, 2014
Any theologian, priest, minister or pastor who explains the mystery of the crucifixion as if they actually understand it is simply good at playacting. They may insist, 'I believe the Bible,' or 'The Bible says it; I believe it.' But these declarations hide their uncertainty.

Steve McSwain: The Widespread Departure From the Church: I've Had It Backwards!

Tuesday April 15, 2014
I've had it backwards all along. You'll see. Just stay with me. I have written extensively on the subject of the widespread departure of those whom reporters describe, in an effort to be politically correct, as the 'religiously unaffiliated.'

Steve McSwain: Is the Bible Literally True?

Tuesday March 25, 2014
To me, the Bible is important. It is for me the sacred story of the origins of my faith. In light of this, I could no more feel as if it were unimportant than a follower of Hinduism would feel the Bhagavad Gita is unimportant. I do not believe, however, that the Bible is a Divinely-dictated book or a sacred text without error.

Steve McSwain: How to Find God: The Five Ways

Tuesday February 04, 2014
There is another way of understanding the Christian story, and it is not only more consistent with what Jesus actually taught, but it shares a common understanding with many other faith traditions.

Steve McSwain: Want to Be Free? Truly Free? Here's How

Thursday January 02, 2014
Until you and I detach from all things, until we can let go of the illusion of control, we remain incarcerated, as it were, incapable of knowing the 'abundant life' as Jesus called it -- which explains much of the worry... fretting... anxiety... division that is our world.

Steve McSwain: Know Why You're Here: The Purpose of Human Existence

Friday September 06, 2013
Is life -- your life -- my life a mere shadow? Just the strutting and fretting upon the stage of some cosmic comedy club? Is it a tale told by a bad comic? Full of noise and nonsense but nothing else? Nothing of value? What is the point of human existence? The purpose of your life and mine?

Steve McSwain: A Fish with Arms? What the--

Thursday July 11, 2013
The instant fish accept that they will never have arms, they grow fins. That's the wisdom with which Mark Nepo begins his thought for today in The Book of Awakening. And, it is a thought that captures my imagination.

Steve McSwain: 6 Questions Christians Should Just Start Asking

Friday June 21, 2013
Since the article I wrote a few weeks ago was released, "6 Things Christians Should Just Stop Saying," I have received a myriad of emails and comments. Most have appreciated my awkward attempts to share my feelings and concerns about the state of Christianity today. Others, however, were not so appreciative.

Steve McSwain: The Madness That Must End Among Christians

Friday May 24, 2013
My propensity to question has led me to the conclusion: Christian fundamentalism doesn't work anymore. Not only in its more extreme forms, as in Islamic fundamentalism. We all know that does not work. Nor can it be tolerated. But fundamentalism does not work in its tamer versions either.

Steve McSwain: 6 Things Christians Should Just Stop Saying

Saturday April 13, 2013
It is time. No, it is past time. Christians must stop saying the following things.
