The Rev. Dr. Charlene Han Powell

The Rev. Dr. Charlene Han Powell is the Associate Pastor for Education and Engagement at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church located in Midtown Manhattan.  She oversees the Young Adult, Community Groups, Children and Families, and Adult Education Ministries at this historic New York City church.  In this capacity, she not only helps the younger generations of the church to cultivate sustainable faith practices, but also convenes cutting edge educational programing for the adults. 

Charlene has served as a theologian-in-residence for the Institute for Youth Ministry, as a preacher for Princeton's Alumni conference, and as a preacher at Montreat's annual youth conferences.  She blogs for Presbyterian Outlook and serves on the Leadership Board of the Next Church.

Charlene was born and raised in Alamo, California, and received her BA from University of California, San Diego; her M.Div from Princeton Theological Seminary; and her D.Min from New York Theological Seminary.  The focus of her dissertation was on the confessional practices of Millennials. 

Charlene and her husband live on the Upper West Side with their daughter Amelie.

Desperate Belief

In her sermon this week, Dr. Charlene Han Powell says if we are able to step back from our children's Bible version of Jesus, we might be able to see that this passage in Mark 7 is about recognizing this woman's desperate belief. Real faith isn't about getting what we ask for, but rather getting the one we are asking.
