Day 1 Benefit Honors 2016 Community Leaders of Faith

The Day 1 annual benefit Tuesday, March 15, will honor 11 Atlanta area leaders well known for their commitment to the good of the community and deeply committed to their church and Christian faith. The event supports the Day1 ecumenical radio and internet ministry (formerly known as The Protestant Hour) which has broadcast sermons by outstanding preachers from the mainline denominations for over 70 years.

 

The Rev. William L. Self will be named the Day1 Pioneer in Christian Ministry, in memoriam. One of the nation's most prominent Baptist ministers, Self was pastor of Wieuca Road Baptist Church for 27 years and of Johns Creek Baptist for 21 years. He died Jan. 9.

 

Representatives from each of the participating denominations on Day1 will be recognized. This year's honorees are:

 

Cooperative Baptist Fellowship: Barbara Goldsmith, community volunteer, Jere Goldsmith, retired from Merrill Lynch, members of Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church.

 

The Episcopal Church:
Robert L. Mays, retired from SunTrust Bank, St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

 

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America:  Evelyn Cannon, community volunteer, Bill Cannon, owner of Templeton and Associates, Christ the King Lutheran, Peachtree Corners.

 

Presbyterian Church (USA): Sally Hauptfuhrer, community volunteer, George Hauptfuhrer, Prime Buchholz & Associates, Northwest Presbyterian Church.

 

United Church of Christ:  Sonjia Young, Eventions, Inc., Walter Young, Walter F. Young, DDS, First Congregational Church, UCC.

 

United Methodist Church: Carolyn Newton Curry, Women Alone Together, author, Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.

Emcee for the evening, representing Day 1 flagship station NEWS 95.5 and AM 750 WSB, is general manager Condace Pressley.
