"Who's in charge here?" can communicate so many different feelings. It may be in reaction to chaos, such as following a disaster, when we are looking for one who can make certain decisions. It can be a plea to help when the normal lines of communication are down. Or it may be an irritation said to a subordinate, in this case reminding the one being spoken to who has the authority. Or it may be simply an inquiry in trying to find some guidance or information. Haven't we all found ourselves in a strange setting and we cannot always know who might be in a position to give us accurate directions?

I have a friend who carries a backpack covered with buttons. She is a walking billboard of causes and I often worry that somebody who disagrees with her buttons will start a fight with her on the subway. But she is undeterred by my worrying and keeps her buttons up to date, removing the outdated ones to make room for current causes. She is too young to have ever worn the button that was popular in the sixties: QUESTION AUTHORITY. It was pinned to backpacks and denim jackets, on campus and off, giving notice that those in authority might not be there for long. I haven't seen that button anywhere lately. I sense that people would be more likely to wear a button that says: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO AUTHORITY? We hear about the breakdown in authority at every turn ~ from the home to the halls of politics, from classrooms to the office of the bishop.
