April 08, 2018

The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead (TEC)

John the Evangelist, the writer of the gospel, begins the story today with these words...It was on that day.

You know, THAT day. Do you have a THAT day? The day that comes to mind when you think of the day that changed the course of your life. Maybe it's your wedding day. Your graduation day. The day you saw the love of your life across the room. The day you realized you were miserable in your job and decided to make a change. You know, THAT day. The day that changed everything. It was THAT day.

Monty Knight: The Sacred Sound of Silence

1 Kings 19:9-12

10th Sunday after Pentecost - Year A

August 13, 2017

The Rev. Dr. Monty Knight (CC(DC))

In the 19th Chapter of I Kings, the ancient Hebrew prophet, Elijah, is having a proverbial "nervous breakdown." He's depressed. So depressed, in fact, he wants to die. "It is enough," Elijah wails, "O Lord, now take away my life." (v.4) Perhaps you've heard this plaintive lament sung by the baritone soloist in the oratorio by Felix Mendelsohn, a marvelous musical composition that bears Elijah's name.

Robin Wilson: Rise Up

The Rev. Robin Wilson (UMC)

The Rev. Robin Wilson likens Jesus' words to his disciples in Matthew 10 to Alexander Hamilton's energizing encouragement to his fellow revolutionaries from the stage musical, "Hamilton," calling them to rise up, to act for that which is most important to them. In the same way, Jesus was honest with his followers about the potential costs of following him--but tells them not to be afraid.

Resurrection Phobia

The Rev. Emily Heath (UCC)

When Jesus healed the dead man in Luke 7, the Rev. Emily Heath says that Luke noted "fear seized them all." The people had never seen anything like this. And in the same way even today there is a phobia about resurrection. We Christians live our faith knowing of the resurrection--new life is possible, we believe--but we often don't believe it when we see it.

Imperfect Community

The Rev. Chase Peeples (UCC)

The Rev. Chase Peeples notes that in this story of Jesus' encounter with the centurion, there is separation--separation by religion, by class, by distance--and yet miracles happen. As we build bridges of understanding with others, we make room for the power of God to act and create community.

Open Wide the Doors

The Rev. Alan Sherouse (CBF)

In his sermon for Pentecost Sunday, the Rev. Alan Sherouse says that the Day of Pentecost reminds us that sometimes the things we end up closing ourselves off from are the things that can also renew and redeem us--the things that flow from the very Spirit of God and help us overcome fear.

The Courage of Easter People

Lindsay Popper (UCC)

While Jesus promises peace, the world offers us trouble, disappointment, and pain. Lindsay Popper says that Jesus offers peace to us not so that we can find shelter from the world, but that we might be able to enter even more deeply into the world, to live fully and boldly as Jesus' disciples.

We of Little Faith

The Rev. Stephen McKinney-Whitaker (PCUSA)

Stephen McKinney-Whitaker says we tend to believe in Jesus enough to worship him, we trust him with our lives, we trust in his words and his power to bring life and cast out sin and death, but we--like the disciples in Mark 4--don’t trust in his power in us.
