Roy Lloyd: Political God Talk
There's a lot of God talk already in this presidential election year and the culture war issues like same-sex marriage, abortion and provision of birth control seem to get top billing.
But some religious aspects of this election are flying under the radar. For example, all of the major religious groups are in favor of a more equitable distribution of wealth seeing severe inequality as morally wrong and unfair.
Evangelical voters are not a unified group and divide on many issues such as immigration and poverty.
In the past Catholics tended to be Democrats and mainline Protestants to be Republicans, but that isn't true any more.
Muslims aren't likely to vote for those who target them with Islamaphobia.
Latino evangelicals, who are deeply concerned about immigration reform, abortion and same-sex marriage, could be the key to winning many of the swing states.
And, finally, a deeply contentious issue will be religious liberty as the candidates spell out their visions of American government and religion.
We've already had a lot of this bickering. So it's going to be quite a year for God and politics!
This is Roy Lloyd.
