Roy Lloyd: What Is Truth?
Pontius Pilate muttered to Jesus, "What is truth?"
We need to ask that same question since recent polls say that what we see as truth is more related to what we want to believe than actual facts.
Right now, many running for political office are appealing to our personal convictions and feelings by distorting reality. But feelings are not facts.
John F. Kennedy said, "The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic."
These days, mythmakers are bombarding us with misinformation and, sad to say, many of us will come to believe what we are told. Honest Abraham Lincoln took a different approach. He said, "I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts."
I believe that truth is stronger than lies and that it's time for truth in America.
This is Roy Lloyd.
