Tony Robinson: You Are Enough
"Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy." - Exodus 20:8
Most of the people I know work really hard. But sometimes it goes beyond that - way beyond. People can be driven. They/ we seem unable to stop doing. We feel we've never done enough. We must work harder, longer, accomplish more.
It is as if some voice were always whispering (shouting?) in our ears, "Never enough. You have never done enough to justify your existence." Or worse, a terrible voice may whisper, "You will never be enough."
It seems to me that one of the gracious messages of Sabbath, a message from God to each and every one of us is, "You are enough. Period. I love you."
When God created the world and everything that is in it, including you and me, God said, "This is good." Which is a way of saying, "I delight in you. I really do. I delight in your being, that you are here, that you are part of the whole crazy show. And really you don't have to do a thing to cause me to delight in you. I just do. So, today at least, just be. You are enough. Honest."
Because life involves both being and doing, God says another thing in speaking the language of Sabbath. Besides, "You are enough," God adds, "You've done enough. Really. Take the rest of the day off, please. I insist."
There are a whole lot of us in this frenetic, driven, 24/7 culture way overdue for drinking deeply of this blessed Sabbath message: "You are enough. You have done enough."
Prayer
Holy, holy, holy - you are holy God. Help me to let you be God for me today. Amen.
