Called by God: Embracing Reluctant Divine Callings

Rev. Dr. Ozzie E. Smith, Jr.—pastor emeritus of Covenant United Church of Christ in South Holland, IL—joins Day1 to reflect on the nature of divine calling. In this stirring excerpt from Episode #4184, Dr. Smith shares how his own journey into ministry was filled with uncertainty, resistance, and a deep sense of responsibility to listen for God’s voice.

Through stories from his life and biblical examples—from Moses in Midian to Paul on the Damascus Road—Dr. Smith reminds us that God's call is not always clear or convenient. Yet, as he proclaims, “It’s not a conference call.” The decision to respond belongs to each of us, even when we feel unprepared or overwhelmed.

This message is especially relevant for those discerning a path in ministry, teaching, or service. Whether you're a preacher, seminary student, or simply someone wondering what God is asking of you, Dr. Smith offers wisdom born of lived experience and spiritual reflection. His words echo the faith of countless saints who said “yes” even through their fear—and found their purpose in doing so.

Rev. Dr. Ozzie E. Smith, Jr.
Nobody can tell you you've been called, but God—God does the calling, and it's not a conference call.

You got the answer, you've got to say yes. And every call in the Bible has been reluctant, from Moses and Midian to Jacob. Before his name was changed to wrestling with that person and Paul on Damascus Road, breathing threats when he got knocked down. Everybody's calling—even Mary was perplexed, but she said, "So, let it be according to your will."

Reflection

Rev. Dr. Ozzie Smith, Jr. captures the complexity of calling: it’s not always clear, and it rarely comes with step-by-step instructions. Yet throughout Scripture, those whom God called—Moses, Jacob, Paul, Mary—responded with reluctance, not polished readiness.

His reminder that “it’s not a conference call” cuts to the heart of personal vocation. The call of God is intimate, unique, and not always understood by those around us. For preachers and teachers of the faith, this message serves as both challenge and comfort: obedience doesn’t begin with full understanding; it begins with a faithful “yes.”

  • How have you experienced reluctance in your own calling?
  • What biblical character’s story mirrors your journey?
  • How might God be nudging you—even through uncertainty—to say “yes” again?
