Reform Judaism - URJ

Reform Judaism, also referred to as Liberal or Progressive Judaism, is a major Jewish denomination emphasizing ethical principles, evolving revelation, and individual autonomy in religious expression. Its origins trace back to 19th-century Germany, where Rabbi Abraham Geiger and others sought to harmonize Jewish tradition with modern life, a legacy that now supports congregations across North America, Israel, the UK, and beyond.

In North America, the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) serves as the congregational body, uniting hundreds of synagogues in the U.S. and Canada, including over 800 congregations and 30,000 affiliated members in Canada alone. Internationally, Reform congregations are connected through the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ).

The movement is known for its commitment to tikkun olam (“repairing the world”), equality, inclusive worship, and adapting Jewish life to contemporary contexts.
