The General Theological Seminary of The Episcopal Church

The General Theological Seminary of The Episcopal Church is located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Founded in 1817 by the General Convention of The Episcopal Church, General Seminary is the church’s original seminary and has served the wider Anglican Communion for more than two centuries. Its mission is to educate and form leaders for the church in a changing world.

The seminary’s life is shaped by theological study, worship, service, and hospitality. Its historic Chelsea Square campus has long been known as a center for Episcopal formation, preparing lay and ordained leaders for ministry through academic programs, spiritual formation, and common prayer. Today, General Seminary continues that work with a focus on faithful leadership, Anglican identity, and the evolving needs of the church and world.
