Lynn Penney is a lay leader and member of Union Church of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, NY and leads Art & Prayer Workshops throughout the Northeast. She is the Director of Human Resources and Administration at Guilford Press. In 2006, she completed a program at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, where she received a certificate for leading Contemplative Prayer Group and Retreats. Her article “Praying in Color” appeared in the December 2007 issue of Presence Magazine. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Mike and dog, Nellie.

I feel that as a society, Americans are acting like Peter in Gethsemane. We are too sleepy to remain in prayer with our hearts turned toward God and when the time calls for action, we jump up and slice the ear off the first enemy we see. What do you do to stay awake to the world and the Holy Spirit?
Hit the Ground Running for Lent

I need to hit the ground running for Lent. I know that sounds like the opposite of Lent. Lent is not to be run through but walked through slowly as if we are on retreat the whole time, in our jobs, homes and families … with friends at dinner. But I need to start on Lent before it gets here – to already be reminding myself of Holy Presence in all things, to be getting up a bit earlier, to know what I want to I need to hit the ground running for Lent.
