Rev. Dr. Michael Knowles, a retired professor and distinguished preacher, served as the George Franklin Hurlburt Chair of Preaching at McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario, from 1997 until his retirement in 2024. Ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada, Dr. Knowles has profoundly shaped the field of homiletics through his teaching, writing, and preaching.
Following undergraduate studies in Victoria and Québec City, Dr. Knowles earned his Master of Divinity (MDiv) in 1982 and his Doctorate in Theology (ThD) in 1991 from Wycliffe College, Toronto. His career includes serving as Assistant Director of the Wycliffe College Institute of Evangelism before joining McMaster Divinity College.
Dr. Knowles has published extensively, contributing both scholarly articles and influential books, including We Preach Not Ourselves: Paul on Preaching and The Unfolding Mystery of the Divine Name. His work emphasizes the intersection of biblical theology, spirituality, and the art of preaching, focusing on how the Spirit of God transforms lives through proclamation.
