The Reverend Mark Birch

The Rev. Mark Birch serves as Canon Rector of Westminster Abbey in London and as Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons. Appointed to these roles in November 2024, he combines responsibilities in one of the most iconic churches in the world with ministry in the heart of the UK’s political life.
Before becoming Canon Rector, Birch was a Minor Canon of Westminster Abbey (2015–2024). In that role, he played a key part in significant national liturgies, including the State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of King Charles III in 2023. His service to the Crown was recognized with appointment as a Member of the Royal Victorian Order.
Birch previously served in parish and chaplaincy ministry across England. He was Priest-in-Charge of St. Faith’s, Alton, as well as Chaplain to the Hospital of St. Cross and Treloar College. Earlier, he ministered as Chaplain at Helen & Douglas House in Oxford and as Chaplain and Fellow of Exeter College, University of Oxford. His ordained ministry began with a curacy in the parish of Cirencester with Watermoor in the Diocese of Gloucester.
Known for his thoughtful preaching, pastoral care, and expertise in liturgy, Birch has consistently emphasized the importance of worship that combines beauty, tradition, and accessibility. His ministry at Westminster Abbey continues to reach millions of visitors annually, where he seeks to offer moments of reflection and spiritual encounter in a historic and sacred space.
