Rev. Dr. Charles A. Wiley III

Denomination: Presbyterian Church (USA) (PCUSA)
Organization: Alliance for Christian Media

The Rev. Dr. Charles A. Wiley, III serves as Vice President of Philanthropy for Day1. He also works as a consultant alongside congregations and church councils on theological and leadership issues.

Charles was born in Suriname, South America, where his parents served as Pilgrim Holiness missionaries, an upbringing that planted the seeds of a life devoted to faith and service. Today, he shares that life with his wife, Betsy, and their two adult children, Ben and Anna.

He has served in pastoral roles, as a denominational leader in the PC(USA) Office of Theology and Worship, and as a teacher in seminaries, congregations, and presbyteries. Most recently, Charles served as Bridge Pastor of Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia, for 18 months. His love for Reformed theology eventually led him to the Presbyterian Church while in seminary.

After graduating from Davidson College, Charles served as a campus staff member for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, then earned a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School and a Ph.D. in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. His graduate and subsequent academic work has focused on the nature and mission of the church.

As a teacher, Charles brings the riches of the theological and confessional tradition to bear on church life. How do theology, worship, and discipleship shape one another to help us join God's mission to redeem all things? For Charles, it is vital that we think the faith, pray the faith, and live the faith within Christian community — loving God with heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Charles views his work in philanthropy as an extension of his teaching. Jesus calls us to follow with our whole lives, and scripture shows that Christ's call encompasses our possessions, our wealth, our treasure. It is a joy for Charles to help people find ways to support God's mission through their treasure.

Charles is the editor of 13 books and the author of numerous published papers, booklets, and monographs. He co-authored, with Vera White, New Worshiping Communities: A Theological Exploration.

Use Your Words - Episode #4246

Tuesday August 04, 2026
Join us for Episode #4246 of Day1, featuring Rev. Dr. Charles A. Wiley III of the Alliance for Christian Media in Atlanta, GA, preaching "Use Your Words" on Romans 10:5-17. As the 11th Sunday after Pentecost approaches, Wiley challenges mainline Protestants' quiet discomfort with evangelism, unpacking Paul's insistence that faith is both lived and spoken. Drawing on a misattributed quote from St. Francis of Assisi, he makes a compelling case for verbal proclamation alongside faithful action. Tune in for a thoughtful, honest word on why preaching the gospel still requires words.
