The soul of Jonathan
was bound to the soul of David,
and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
-1 Samuel 18:1
Jonathan and David. One of the classic friendships of all time. Two souls bound together as brothers in the Lord.
The fact that David would become the next king of Israel, the successor to Jonathan's father Saul, only made the friendship more remarkable. Because by natural right, the throne was Jonathan's as Saul's rightful heir.
But Jonathan's heart for God was pure, too. He knew God had called David, and he honored that call. Rather than considering the crown something he lost, Jonathan considered David's value as a person, friend, and future king to be a far greater gain.
Their friendship would ultimately result in tragedy. But certainly neither regretted it.
Wouldn't you like to have a friendship on that level, a soul friend? Perhaps God will bless you with a friend like that. Perhaps God will equip you to be a friend like that.
