The Rev. Dr. J. Barney Hawkins IV

The Reverend James Barney Hawkins IV, PhD is Vice-President for Institutional Advancement and Associate Dean for the Center for Anglican Communion Studies at Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, VA. Since 2000 he has also served as Professor of Pastoral Theology at VTS. He is the Honorary Associate at Immanuel-on-the Hill, Alexandria, Virginia.

From 2000-2007 Hawkins was the Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at VTS. Before joining the faculty, Hawkins served four Episcopal congregations as lay pastoral assistant, St Philip's, Durham, North Carolina (1976-1979); as Associate, Trinity, Asheville, North Carolina (1979-1981); as rector, Ascension, Hickory, North Carolina (1981-1995) and as rector, Redeemer, Baltimore, Maryland (1995-2000). He was an adjunct religion professor at Lenoir-Rhyne College (ELCA) in Hickory, North Carolina from 1982 to 1995.

Hawkins was ordained a deacon on June 30, 1979 and a priest on May 3, 1980 by the Rt. Rev. William G. Weinhauer in the Diocese of Western North Carolina. He has a B.A. in history from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina and earned the MDiv from Duke Divinity School in 1974 with one year as a special student at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In 1981 he completed the requirements for a PhD in Graduate Studies in Religion at Duke University. His dissertation was "The Colonial Commissary in Church and State: Alexander Garden and the Historical Roots of the Vestry in the American Church."

Hawkins has served on the boards of Episcopal Relief and Development and Kanuga Conferences, Inc. Presently he serves as treasurer on the North American Regional Committee of St. George's College, Jerusalem.

His publications include a portfolio of sermons (1976-pres.), book reviews and articles in parish newsletters and the Seminary Journal. He is a contributor to the Lectionary Commentary Series "Feasting on the Word," edited by David L. Bartlett and Barbara Brown Taylor and published by Westminster John Knox Press.

Hawkins has been married since 1975 to the Rev. Linda Wofford Hawkins, an Episcopal priest. They have two grown children and are happy travelers and avid gardeners. They cherish time at their Blue Ridge Mountain home in the western corner of South Carolina.
