The Rev. John Porter

The Rev. John Porter is a retired Episcopal priest who has served Atlanta parishes for more than 35 years. Currently a full-time faculty member at Holy Innocents' Episcopal School, he teaches courses on Ethics and The Jewish Life, the latter in concert with the rabbinical staff of Temple Sinai in Sandy Springs. Porter received his master's degree in theology from The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. and has taught theology at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N. Y., as well as the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va. John Porter has visited the Republic of Haiti over 40 times since 1998 and has assisted in raising more than $500,000 to build schools and churches. He is married to Mary, who has visited Haiti three times, and the couple has two children, Susanna Mees and Geoffrey Porter, who are both on the faculty and staff of Holy Innocents' Episcopal School.

The earthquake struck out of the blue in the slow, hot hours of the late afternoon. A weird clicking sound was accompanied by eerie puffs of smoke sneaking out of the cracks and crevices of concrete walls. Then, terrible explosions.
