The Rev. Tyler Sit
Denomination: United Methodist Church (UMC)
Organization: New City Church
Rev. Tyler Sit is the founding pastor of New City Church in Minneapolis, a congregation known for centering marginalized voices, particularly those of queer people of color. Launched in 2015, New City quickly became a leading voice in the United Methodist Church for its integration of social justice, environmental advocacy, and spiritual practice.
As the son of Chinese immigrants, Rev. Sit's multicultural background has shaped his ministry approach. He earned a Bachelor’s in Communication Studies from Boston University and a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. His diverse training, which includes work as a community organizer and prison chaplain, informs his passion for justice-driven ministry.
New City Church became the first "built-from-scratch" church plant in decades to charter in Minnesota’s United Methodist Conference. In 2022, it expanded by launching Northeast United Methodist Church. The church's work has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Minnesota Public Radio for its focus on racial and economic justice.
In addition to his pastoral work, Rev. Sit co-founded Intersect, a church-planting network that supports intersectional movements for justice. He is also the author of Staying Awake: The Gospel for Changemakers, a guide to Christian activism used by congregations and seminaries.
Rev. Sit is a passionate advocate for aligning faith with justice, and his ministry continues to inspire innovative approaches to community-building and activism.
