Easy Victories

Men often become victims of their own victories. "The next most dreadful thing to a battle lost, is a battle won," said The Duke of Wellington.

The victorious man is often tempted to be satisfied with his victory and disinclined to draw his sword into further battles. Often, he becomes too self-confident and rushes into the next battle without due caution and vigilance.

The Rev. John R. Gunn reminds us that even Jesus experienced this peril of victory. He writes, "Immediately following his baptism at the River Jordan, when the heavens opened and God said, 'This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased' Jesus faced his most severe temptations."

Great triumphs are often succeeded by great tragedies. It is in the high moments of life that ones needs to be particularly on his guard.
