Deeper Needs of Our Being

February 24, 2011

We read in the Twenty-Third Psalm, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Shall not want what? Riches? Ease? Luxury? Popularity?

According to author John R. Gunn, "These are not the things the Psalmist had in mind," he continues, "We could have all these things and still be in deep want. What the psalmist had in mind were the things which answer to the deeper needs of our being."

These things he proceeds to reveal to us:

I shall not want rest - He maketh me to lie down; come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.

I shall not want peace - He leadeth me beside the still waters; My peace I give unto you. Not the peace that is dependent upon external conditions, but a peace that is inward and abiding.

I shall not want strength - He restoreth my soul. As our soul's vitality is continually being used up, He continually restores and renews its strength.

I shall not want guidance - He leadeth me in the paths of rightousness.

I shall not want assurance - Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me.

I shall not want comfort - Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

I shall not want food and protection - Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.

I shall not want relief - Thou anointest my head with oil.

I shall not want joy - My cup runneth over.

I shall not want any good thing - Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me.

I shall not want a dwelling place - I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
