Christian Light

October 27, 2011

The lights of the Christmas candles and the lights of the Christmas tree are gone now, but the great light, the light of the world remains. And will remain with us throughout the year, for Jesus said, 'I have come into the world as light so that no one who has faith in me should remain in darkness.'

The apostle John says, 'God is light and no shadow of darkness can exist in Him.' To live a Christian life is to live in the light. None of us likes the dark, the gloom - we like bright, sunny days out in the open air. A Christian is like this - gone are the shadows, gone is the sadness. Days are spent walking in the path of the light of the world; Jesus, who came to us on Christmas Day and remains with us all through the year.

The prophet Isaiah, centuries before the birth of Christ, proclaimed, 'The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Those who dwelt in the land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.' And Saint Paul, writing to a small Church in Asia Minor, says to the congregation, 'For though you were once all darkness, now as Christians, you are light. Live like men who are at home in the daylight, for where light is, there all goodness springs up - all justice and truth.' So with the Christian light, the entire year is spent bathed in the radiance of that light that came to Earth once upon a Christmas tide.
