The Rev. Barbara Berry-Bailey is the Associate Director for Companionship - African for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, headquartered in Chicago, IL.
She formerly was producer/director of "Grace Matters," the radio ministry of the ELCA, and before that the associate director of worship in the ELCA's Division for Congregational Ministries. She had a successful career in public broadcasting prior to her ordination in the ELCA and has served congregations in Pennsylvania and metropolitan Chicago.
What has always bugged me about this account is that most of the people in Jesus' inner circle, that is, the twelve, were not witnesses to Jesus' transfiguration. Nine people missed it and who knows if this would have been pivotal for Judas. Only three, Peter, James, and John are privy to this awesome event. And it seems Peter wants to keep it that way. "It is good for us to be here. Let us make three dwellings, one for each of you." In other words, let's just stay right here. But in all fairness to Peter, I would imagine it happened so quickly, he just wanted it to last. And I can relate to that somewhat.
Read full transcript...In verse 35, our Gospel lesson says Jesus got up in the morning while it was still very dark and he went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. I have often wondered what made this place deserted. What made it empty? Was it an abandoned place or was it simply never inhabited by humans? It couldn't have been too far from the maddening crowd because Simon and his companions found Jesus.
