The Rev. Sarah Jackson Shelton is senior pastor of the Baptist Church of the Covenant in Birmingham, AL, part of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Sarah is a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, earning the M.R.E. and M.Div. degrees. She served several churches in Alabama before becoming the interim at Covenant in 2000, and then senior pastor in 2002.
In 2004 Sarah was featured in a Time magazine arrticle as one of the rare examples of women preachers in pulpits of "tall steeple churches," alone with Joanna Adams and Susan Andrews.
As I came into the office one morning recently, I realized that I had a large manila envelope on my desk. Thinking that it was probably some promotional materials for the pastor and his wife, I was just beginning to drop it into the recycle bin when I recognized the name on the return address. It read: Dr. William A. Hull. Dr. Hull is an esteemed Baptist pastor and professor having taught at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and, more recently, at Samford University. So my curiosity was immediately piqued.
