Roy Lloyd: Who Is Right?

What God is like and commands us to do--or whether God even exists--can only be settled by each one of us individually.  But there's no lack of those who will strenuously work to convert us to their point of view.

It is irksome in the extreme to endure people who are adamant that what they believe is completely right.  In this election season the public square involving religion and politics is rife with "right-minded" people who are vying for our attention and approval.

I think it is an act of faith to leave some things open to question.  Faith has been used to wage war and justify massacres.  Faith also has inspired tremendous compassion and transcendent generosity.

So it all boils down to how adherents of a particular religious viewpoint conduct themselves and treat others, especially those with whom they disagree.  In other words, do the commandments and classic virtues lead believers to exhibit an inspiring way of life?  As many hover between doubt and faith, the examples of those who say they are believers will determine our view of their God.

This is Roy Lloyd.
