Kenneth Samuel: Keep Watching

"The Lord replied: 'Look, and be amazed! You will be astounded at what I am about to do!'" - Habakkuk 1:5 (Living Bible)

When I was in grade school, I could hardly wait to rush home after school to see the latest episode of "Batman." I'm talking the classic "Batman" played by Adam West, with Eartha Kitt as Catwoman.

In one cliff-hanger, Catwoman has lured Batman and Robin to an abandoned candle factory on the outskirts of Gotham City. There, she and her minions have managed to ensnare Batman and Robin in a net that hangs perilously over a cauldron of hot boiling wax.

The net holding Batman and Robin is held up by a rope attached to a pulley that is being turned by Catwoman to lower her captives to their doom. But just as she lowers the net into the cauldron of boiling wax, the series announcer interrupts the scene with these words: "Is this the end of the Dynamic Duo?" "Will Catwoman's purr be the last thing Batman will ever hear?" "Has the Caped Crusader met his final match in a candle factory?"

Then the announcer says: "Don't touch that dial! Tune in tomorrow! Same Bat time! Same Bat channel!"

I learned that the key to unravelling Batman's fate was to stay tuned and keep watching. In real life, we find ourselves in much greater perils than those of Batman. But just when we are tempted to think that all is lost, God says: "Keep watching."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. told us: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice."

Don't miss God's next episode.

Prayer

God, keep us vigilant. Help us not to miss your movements in the dark. Amen.
