Facing Life

Day1 is proud to bring you the Rev. John R. Gunn Facing Life Collection, which comprises selections from the thousands of messages which originally appeared in newspapers, books, and over the radio. Rev. Gunn said, "throughout these thirty-six years I have sought through my daily writings to point out God's answer to human needs as revealed in the Bible. It is my hope and prayer that He whom they seek to honor will use them in a wide sphere."

Little did John R. Gunn know that his writings would be extended in different venues; first the newspaper continued to recycle his columns daily for 15 years beyond his passing, then over 2,000 radio stations carried his messages daily for 12 years and now they are available around the world on the web.

Be Still and Know. . .

These magnificent mini-messages will inspire and encourage you.  Uniquely gifted author John R. Gunn clearly defines scriptural truth to equip readers for navigating the shifting shoals of human experience toward fulfilling their goals and dreams.  Select a topic and quickly discover how God's timeless precepts can enrich your life each day as fail-proof formulas for a brighter future are applied.

John R. Gunn was first a pastor and then a daily columnist, his vivid phrases capturing the attention of all varieties of newspaper readers.  His persistent theme was love--first, God's changeless love for us, and second, how we can emulate this love for people placed upon the paths of our life journeys.

All this echoes the supreme mandate of Jesus: ". . . that you love one another as I have loved you" (John 13:34), and, as Jesus underscored the ancient biblical command, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31; cf. Leviticus 19:18).  No greater commands exist.  As Billy Graham, world renown evangelist now acclaimed the greatest missionary since the apostle Paul, concluded sermons with "God loves you and so do I", this phrase is also a fitting mantra of John R. Gunn.

The author was called home before the internet search engines of our times emerged.  He would be amazed how we can now access in an instant seemingly endless biblical insights for us to treasure.

This Be Still and Know. . . collection of Reverend Gunn's two and a half minute devotions were aired on the radio nationally over fourteen years following a thirteen year daily run in the newspaper.  Now, all this inspiration is there for you via Day1.org and bestill-andknow.com.

This collection of meditations comprise John R. Gunn's legacy to all of us.  Recently released books, compiled from his writings, are also available on the internet:

Companionship

The Rev. John Gunn (other)

On the topic of marriage, The Rev. Gunn writes, "A true wife delights more in her husband's companionship than in any success he may achieve. The apostle Peter offers excellent counsel to husbands; he says, 'Likewise ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife as being heirs together of the grace of life.' The husband who accepts this counsel has a happy wife and a happy home."

Routine Life

The Rev. John Gunn (other)

In this episode of Be Still and Know on the subject of routine, The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "Let not those of us whose destiny it is to move in the same circuit year after year become weary of the monotonous trudge or feel that our life is not worthwhile. Perhaps the new year does not promise any great advancement in position or fame. But let us face it with the high resolve to make it the best of all our years."

When a Sinner Repents

The Rev. John Gunn (other)

In this Facing Life article based on Luke 15:10, The Rev. John R. Gunn writes about taking pride in repentance. "Be ashamed of your sins, but do not be ashamed to repent of them and confess them. It is the only way back to self-respect, the only way back to God and the better life."
