The Power of Neglect
Bill Self said we can have difficulty in life because of two thieves: the thief of drifting and the thief of neglect. Some people start out as strong Christians, solid in their church, but then life becomes complicated and they gradually drift away. Others, Bill said, neglect their spiritual life altogether and never accept Jesus as savior. “Drift makes you a spiritual cripple. Neglect gives you a seat in hell.”
Back to Basics
Bill Self says many Christians are like the people in Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth, who did not believe in him, so he could do few miracles. “The power of God, the immediate power of God in our lives, is much more available than the average Christian knows, or is willing to dare tap ... This is the central tragedy of any church, that God in Jesus Christ is willing to do much more in and through us than we are willing to do or to let him do.”

In this Day 1 Podcast Extra The Rev. Dr. Kenneth Carter, pastor of Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC., shares his personal insights and experiences.
The Angels Who Announced Him
Bill Self said our culture has a distorted understanding of angels — who they are and that they do. The Bible records numerous time when angels appear as messengers of God. Such was the case at the birth of Jesus. Bill said their message was “God has invaded history. He has broken the veil. He has broken into our cave. He’s come into the darkness that we grope around in and He said, ‘Here’s the way. The light is here.’”
Where Have All the Heroes Gone?
Bill Self said the Bible is full of the great heroes, like David, Samson and Solomon, but there are also the obscure people whose dedication and commitment got the job done. These are the quiet heroes. Big or small, rich or poor, urban or country, churches are not filled with religious celebrities. Churches are filled, run, and carried by the obscure.
